Abigail Demyanek - Travel Grid

What one item do you never leave home without (in life or travel)?
I never leave home without my camera or a journal to jot down thoughts, sights, and memories as I go.

What three items would you bring along with you to a deserted island?
Hmmm, that's tough - I would probably bring a compass, a few of my favorite books, and tacos.

What’s the next travel destination on your list and how do you start planning for the trip?
I'm actually headed to Uganda, Peru, and France soon! First, I get really excited (I may or may not do a happy dance) and then I start drawing up an outline of what I'm going to be doing and what I want to do.

Where is your favorite “hidden gem” to visit?
It wouldn't be a hidden gem if I told ya! As of now, some of my favorite hidden gems are in British Columbia, Canada.

Paper map or GPS and can you offer any words of wisdom why?
Both! And my advice would be to not let fear hinder you from traveling. Be aware, but don't allow fear to take away from the experience of traveling. And don't plan things down to the greatest detail - draw up an outline and fill it in as you go, you never know who you're going to meet or the new places you'll get to experience that are on the road less traveled. Leave room for spontaneous/unexpected memories to happen!

Abigail Demyanek - Riding a horse

Grand Cayman Islands
My husband and I had planned a horseback ride on the beach, but when we arrived we had no cell service to connect with our guide and we missed our scheduled tour. It was the best thing because we ended up with a private horseback ride on the beaches of the Grand Cayman Islands and it was unforgettable to say the least, and worth every bit of trouble we went through to get there.

Abigail Demyanek - South Africa

Limpopo Territory of South Africa
I had the opportunity to visit a small village in the northern part of South Africa; I visited a small after-school program for orphans and children that are in need. The after-school program provides a meal for the children to take home to eat before returning to school the next morning. Pictured here, the children were teaching us their songs and dances. One of the coolest things to experience!

Abigail Demyanek - Japan

Japan
I lived in Japan for almost a year in 2011-2012 (sadly, lost all of my photos from that time), and I decided to return in 2015. I went with a friend and on this day we were exploring a local temple and its vast hydrangea garden, and we stumbled upon a school archery competition.
